St. Lawrence Seaway collection, 1916-1959.

Collection consists of scrapbooks, notes, photographs, clippings, and pamphlets collected by Carleton Mabee relating to early attempts to improve navigation on the St. Lawrence River, other inland navigation and hydroelectric power projects, natural resources of the St. Lawrence Valley, construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, and public reaction to it; speeches, pamphlets, and clippings collected by Lewis K. Sillcox on the struggle to win Congressional approval and public acceptance of the Seaway during the 1930s and 1940s, including material published by anti-Seaway groups such as the Association of American Railroads and the National St. Lawrence Project Conference; reports, pamphlets, maps, speeches, photographs, Congressional hearings and reports, and legal papers such as briefs, statements, and decisions concerning hydroelectric power and the development of the St. Lawrence Seaway collected by George S. Reed, attorney and officer of the Power Authority of the State of New York; and scrapbooks of clippings on the Seaway from North Country newspapers during the years of its construction, 1954-1959, possibly compiled by Andrew Peters.
